Return HomeWhat Residents & Families Say
These reflections come from those who have experienced Calm Bower firsthand, either as residents or as family members seeking care for loved ones.
Kulap Srisawat
Resident, Cultural Program
Chiang Rai
I moved here eight months ago after living alone became too quiet. The temple garden visits remind me of walks I used to take with my late husband, and the tea blending sessions have introduced me to herbs I'd forgotten about. The staff never rush me, which I appreciate more than anything.

Daughter of Resident
Bangkok
My mother needs help with daily routines but didn't want to feel institutionalized. When we visited Calm Bower, she sat in the garden for an hour just listening to birds. That convinced her more than anything I could say. The staff contacts me weekly with updates, which gives me peace of mind working in Bangkok.

Thawee Chaiyaporn
Resident, Shared Residency
Chiang Rai
The food reminds me of home cooking, not restaurant meals. I share a room with another resident who also enjoys quiet mornings, which works well for both of us. My only wish would be more choices for afternoon activities, though I understand not everyone has the same interests.

Narong Wattana
Son of Resident
Mae Sai
Dad has diabetes and mobility challenges, so we needed somewhere that could assist him properly while letting him maintain independence. Calm Bower strikes that balance. He still makes his own choices about how to spend his days, but help is there when he needs it. The mountain air seems to agree with him too.

Siriwan Wisut
Resident, Private Retreat
Chiang Rai
Having my own room with a balcony was essential for me, and my personal companion understands my routines without me having to explain each time. She accompanies me on morning walks and knows when I prefer solitude. The privacy allows me to maintain my sense of self while being part of a caring community.

Anucha Khamkaew
Nephew of Resident
Chiang Mai
My uncle was initially hesitant about moving into residential care, but the trial stay option let him experience it without commitment. He appreciated the lack of pressure. Now he's been there five months and seems content. I visit monthly and can see he's more social than when he lived alone.

Resident Journeys
From Isolation to Community
The Challenge
Mrs. Somjai, 76, had been living alone in her village home for three years following her husband's passing. Family members lived in Bangkok and Chiang Mai, visiting occasionally but unable to provide daily companionship. She rarely left her home and had begun losing interest in cooking and self-care.
The Solution
Her daughter arranged a visit to Calm Bower during a temple garden excursion day. Mrs. Somjai joined the group and found herself conversing with other residents about plants she recognized from her own garden. She chose the Cultural Program option for the monthly outings and weekly activities.
The Results
After eleven months at Calm Bower, Mrs. Somjai participates regularly in herbal tea sessions and has taken up bird-watching during garden walks. She has formed friendships with three other residents and looks forward to monthly market visits. Her daughter reports she seems "more like herself again."
Managing Health While Maintaining Independence
The Challenge
Mr. Wichai, 82, required assistance with diabetes management and had mobility limitations following a minor stroke. His son worked full-time and could not provide the daily monitoring and support needed, but Mr. Wichai resisted the idea of "being taken care of."
The Solution
A trial two-week stay at Calm Bower allowed Mr. Wichai to experience the dignity-centered approach. Staff assisted with medication routines and bathing but allowed him to maintain control over daily decisions. He appreciated that help was offered, not imposed.
The Results
Mr. Wichai has been at Calm Bower for fourteen months. His diabetes is better controlled with regular meal schedules, and he's regained some mobility through gentle walking on garden paths. He maintains his preference for quiet independence but accepts assistance when needed.
